Introduction to Odissi Taal with Dr Elena Catalano (UK)

This workshop is an introduction to Odissi taal and it is offered in preparation to the short-course (5-weeks) led by Shri G. Ramprasad in January-February 2021 (see below). This one-off workshop aims to provide students with a solid understanding of concepts and practical aspects of Odissi Taal so that they can make the most of the course with the taal teacher.

  • Odissi Rhythm: aesthetics, concepts and practical aspects

  • Study of the most commonly used Odissi rhythmic cycles: taal structure, recitation with hand-clapping in three speeds

Level: beginner to intermediate

Fee: £12

Hindustani Vocal for odissi Dancers With Ranjana Gathak (UK-USA)

5 Sessions Wednesday 6-7.pm GMT (January: 6-13-20-27, February: 3)

  • Sargam (Vocal exercises) in Bilawal Thaat + another Thaat

  • Note placement and connecting location of notes with the voice

  • Study of Odissi Repertoire Item Harir Iha

  • Study of a Sloka dedicated to the Goddess (Sarva Mangalam or Namo Devi)


Odissi Tala With G. Ramprasad (India)

5 Sessions Sundays 12-1pm GMT (January: 10-17-24-31, February: 7)

  • Odissi Talas Recitation: Reciting dughun, tighun and chaughun for common talas (ektali, triputa, khemta and jhampta tal)

  • Ukutas and Khandi: rhythmic syllables used in Odissi: how they can be combined, how they can be recited with different intonation or stretching to afford different movement qualities, examples and practice of different combinations using some of the ukuta, creating simple khandi.

  • Tihais: commonly used tihais, how to create tihais in common talas (understanding the structure of a tihai, how many avartans it can take, use of pauses, whether it needs to end always on sama). Creating a tihai

  • Arasas: elements of an arasa, structure of an arasa, what makes a good arasa, arasa examples, creating your own arasa and receiving feedback.

RANJANA GATHAK

Ranjana was born and raised in London and started learning North Indian Singing at a young age. She decided to continue her learning by studying under Maestro Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty at his school in Kolkata. She continues to train with him and his student Anol Chatterjee. Ranjana recently released a contemporary album titled The Butterfly Effect with Liran Donin and Jack Ross. The trio were invited to open for John McLaughlin at the Barbican in April 2019. She has worked as a performer/composer and teacher for the last 10 years, performances include Buckingham Palace, Saffron Walden, Bath International Music Festival, London Jazz Festival, Wigmore Hall and the Royal Opera House. Since Spring 2018, Ranjana has been teaching beginners vocal for the Ali Akbar College of Music and worked with the Chitresh Das Institute in San Francisco, California.

Shri G Ramprasad

The Mardala is a percussion instrument unique to Odissi. Shri G.Ramprasad, in a career spanning over twenty years, has dedicated himself to exploring the intricacies of this percussive art, evolved from the traditional rhythmic instrument of Odisha under the guidance of his Guru, Shri Banamali Moharana, Head of the Department of Odissi Mardala and Shri Dhaneswar Swain, lecturer at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. Some of the leading artists he has accompanied include Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra, Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi, Sri Gangadhar Pradhan, Sri Durgacharan Ranbir, Smt. Kumkum Lal, Smt.Aruna Mohanty, Smt. Jhelum Paranjpe, Smt. Debi Basu, Smt. Daksha Mashruwala, Smt. Anandi Ramachandran, Dr. Ileana Chitaristi, Ms. Parwati Dutta..Pt.Raghunath Panigrahi, Sri Ghanashyam Panda and Sri Ramhari Das.
